About the Order of St. George

The Order of Saint George is an ancient and military order of knighthood, founded in Visograd, Hungary on 23 April,1326 by King Charles 1 (Robert of Anjou). It is the most ancient of those Chivalric Orders which were created as “Royal” institutions, independent of the church. Through its various branches in several European countries, The Order has a more or less continuous existence for over 680+ years. Grand Masters of The Order have included Kings, Emperors, Heads of State and great national figures, including Pope Paul III. Originally a military and charitable Order, military service is no longer an absolute requirement, although much of the ceremonial and pageantry of The Order continues to imbibe a military flavour.

Charity remains an important part of the work of The Order and the Grand Priory of Canada is registered as a numbered charitable organization with Revenue Canada (Reg No: 81106 0672 RR0001) under the title of the The International Knightly Order of St. George Canadian Corporation.

The Order plays an important part in Hungarian State traditions and since the year 1989, an annual investiture ceremony is held each April in Hungary. The Insignia of The Order of Saint George incorporates the Crown of St. Stephen, surmounting a cross florry centered with a red oval eschutcheon with a raised gold depiction of St. George slaying the dragon.
